AFY improves your English language skills and provides a strong academic foundation for university study and beyond. On completion, you are guaranteed admission to a wide range of degree programmes, provided you meet the entry requirements for your chosen course.

The Auckland Foundation Year

The Auckland Foundation Year prepares you to enter one of our three partner universities in New Zealand.

We offer two different programme options - Standard and Intensive - so you can choose the right one for you, based on your academic grades and English language level. Both options offer guaranteed progression to an undergraduate degree on successful completion of the course.

What will I study?

On both the Standard and Intensive Programmes you will study English language and four elective subjects. You will also develop important study skills and employability skills.

Elective subjects: Accounting, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Classical Studies, Economics, Geography, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics.

Pre-Foundation Programme

You’ll study a range of subjects to prepare you for studying the Auckland Foundation Year.

The Pre-Foundation Programme is a 22-23 week programme, designed for students who do not meet the academic or English entry requirements for the Auckland Foundation Year.

On this course you will receive an introduction to the core subjects that you will be studying at foundation level. You will receive high quality academic tuition, as well as one-to-one support from your teachers, to ensure you are ready to begin the Auckland Foundation Year at the end of the programme.

Develop your English language skills to meet the entry requirements for the Auckland Foundation Year.

What will I study?

Core language skills

The English Language Preparation Programme focuses on four core English language skills:

  • Speaking
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Listening

Key study skills

You will develop key study skills that boost your confidence and help you learn faster, including:

  • Exam techniques
  • Critical analysis
  • Note-taking
  • Text scanning

The Auckland Foundation Year

Standard

  • Programme length: 4 terms (40/38/35 weeks depending on intake date)
  • Age: 16+
  • Intakes: January, July and August

Intensive

  • Programme length: 3 terms (31 weeks)
  • Age: 16+
  • Intakes: April and October

Pre-Foundation Programme

  • Programme length: 22 weeks (January), 23 weeks (July)
  • Age: 16+
  • Intakes: January and July

English Language Preparation

  • Programme length: 12 or 24 weeks
  • Age: 16+
  • Intakes: April, July or September

The Auckland Foundation Year

Standard

  • Academic: Good high school graduation grades or equivalent
  • English language requirement: IELTS score of 5.0 with no band less than 5.0, or approved equivalent.

Intensive

  • Academic: Excellent high school graduation grades or equivalent
  • English language requirement: IELTS score of 5.5, with no band less than 5.0, or approved equivalent.

Pre-Foundation Programme

  • Academic: Good high school graduation grades or equivalent
  • English language requirement:IELTS score of 4.5 (writing no less than 4.5) or approved equivalent.

English Language Preparation

  • English language requirement: IELTS minimum 4.0, with no band less than 3.5.
